In a future shaped by rising sea levels, the design of PRCH Stool draws inspiration from the adaptive root systems of mangrove trees, the stool transforms their branching forms into a woven, skeletal frame made from aluminium and rattan. A gas-lift mechanism enables height adjustment, echoing the vertical behaviours of local species like crabs and herons. Blending biomimicry, craft, and climate-aware thinking, it offers a seating solution that is both functional and narrative-driven.
Concepts and research into the dystopian future are grounded in Singapore’s context, focusing on her few remaining mangroves that continue to serve as natural buffers and forms of protection.
Narrative
Rooted in the shifting landscape of Singapore’s future, this project draws inspiration from the quiet persistence of her remaining mangroves. These ecosystems are more than remnants of the past; they are living blueprints for resilience. Through their forms and behaviours, the design explores how nature adapts and endures, offering a language for how we might shape the world ahead — not by resisting change, but by learning to move with it.
